fasting

There are many different types of fast. Most fasts will fall under three main categories: absolute, normal and partial.

Absolute

No food or water is taken. This fast should only be undertaken with medical consultation and supervision.

Normal

Only liquids are drunk, especially water.  This fast has also been known as a water or liquid fast.  Because of a lack of minerals and vitamins, caution should be taken. However, this fast could involve other liquids, such as tea or juices.

Tea Fast -herbal teas are drunk without sugar or honey. Juice Fast-freshly squeezed vegetable and /or fruit juices

*Broth may also be substituted for juices.

Partial

A partial fast may involve – giving up particular foods and/or drinks for an extended period of time. – Eating raw fruits and/or vegetables is a fast commonly practiced.  Vegetables, in particular, can also be slightly cooked or steamed.

Other Partial

WHEY- consists of 1 to 2  quarts, or liters of dietary whey along with herbal tea and 80 milliliters of fresh herbal juice. This fast is particularly suited for people with sensitive stomachs, metabolic disorders or colon, or those suffering from constipation. Whey counteracts the level of acid in the body, a condition that can result from eating too much meat.

WHOLE GRAIN – entails eating three portions a day of oat meal, rice, or linseed cereal. These portions should be eaten in small amounts. This fast is the best method for those who suffer from stomach disorders.

In addition to giving up food, there are other fasts that some Christians implement in order to concentrate on prayer.

NEWS – a set period away from the news media.

TELEVISION  – denying oneself of favorite programs, such as Law and Order, Desperate Housewives, Biggest Loser etc.

DESSERT – refraining from all sweets, such as chocolate, cakes etc.

CAFFEINE- abstaining from all caffeinated products, especially coffee
