What is holistic spirituality? Quite simply, it is living an integrated life as Christ did. Our pastimes, family, friends, work, finances, recreation, emotions, and intellect—all of life—is animated by the spirit of Christ. All life comes from God, for it is in Him we move and have our being. Hence, wellness from this Christ-centric approach is an active, dynamic and ongoing process through which we become aware and make healthy—life giving choices that lead us toward a more intimate relationship with Christ and wholesome relationship with others. Making these choices require conscious living and wisdom.
Hence, our health and well-being require living a life of awareness and the ability to apply wisdom in living life. According to the sacred scripture, Christ is this wisdom:
Instead, credit God with your new situation: you are united with Jesus the Anointed. He is God’s wisdom for us and more. He is our righteousness and holiness and redemption (1 Corinthians 1:30 The Voice).
That means we can apply wisdom to all of life, but first we must become aware—aware of what we eat, aware of the hours we sit, aware of the programs we watch, aware of our relationships with our family, friends, co-workers, community and world, aware of our emotions, and aware of our body. This awareness is needed in order to apply wisdom. Wisdom is the skill in the art of living life with every area under God’s dominion.
In 2017, I published The Ten Guiding Lights to Health and Wholeness. On January 11, 2021, I launched a health and wellness program called Journey to Wholism that is based on the foundation of this book. Those who prefer an experiential approach rather than a content focused program will find this approach appealing. My mission is to guide participants in using 10 tools to improve their life, so that after 10 weeks or less they will begin to experience an integrated life of health, healing and harmony in their body, mind and spirit to live out their best life.
Our lives—our dreams or goals, are not separate compartments from God’s plans. That means we examine them in light of God’s word. If we do not, we risk living in denial, avoiding truth, seeking diversion, entertainment and escape. I remember when I had come to a crossroad in my life: would I pursue the sport of bodybuilding at the professional level or not? The question that I thought would unlock the answer was the “why”. Why did I want to become a professional bodybuilder? The answer never came. I could not come up with a reason that was life-giving and thus motivating. So, here I am today. After aligning my plans with God, every step led me to a new discovery—more life, more health in every area of my life. This is the Journey to (W)holism.
