god and universe
Without a doubt, science has done an amazing job of helping us to understand the universe around us.  As Christians, understanding how our world works should give us more reason to worship God for this beautiful world He made. However, the secular world sees things differently.  Many seem to be of the opinion that if we can understand it, then God doesn’t have anything to do with it.  Instead, the only place where such see room for God is in the gaps, and those gaps (as they see it) get smaller and smaller every year. After all, people used to believe that God held the heavens together, but now that we understand gravity there is no need to involve God in the process.  Now that we have a detailed understanding of chemistry and biology, God doesn’t have anything to do with the human body, or lightning, or volcanoes, or anything else for that matter. However, there is an important fact which such people miss, and which the Bible clears up.  Colossians 1:17 states, “And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist” (NKJV).  The NIV puts it slightly differently: “He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”  In other words, God is the one that is making everything work.  So when the Bible says in Job 38:31 that God holds the Pleiades (a small cluster of stars) together it is being quite literal: God really is the one holding the Pleiades together.  Science has since discovered that gravity is the method God uses to do this, but that does not change the fact that God is the one who is doing it. Indeed, the fact that the universe continues to function on a day-to-day basis is because God continues to make it run.  God is not some distant deity who made the laws of physics, set the universe running, and sat back to watch, only showing up for the occasional miracle.  Instead, He is actively involved with every aspect of this Universe which He made.  Every time my feet hit the ground it is because God is using gravity to pull them to the ground.  Every single beat of my heart is literally a gift from God: He is the one making it beat.  Science reveals the “how”, but only we can tell people about the “who” behind it all.
