In our journey through life, we often find ourselves in various spaces – some we choose, others thrust upon us. These spaces, particularly the liminal ones, offer opportunities for growth and transformation. But how do we navigate them effectively? The answer lies in developing a strong moral core.

The Foundation: Embodying Virtues

The cultivation of virtues is at the heart of personal growth. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control aren’t just lofty ideals—they’re the building blocks of an exemplary character. Truth, honesty, justice, purity, beauty, and wholesomeness should become the essence of your being.

Practical Application: Establish a daily routine that includes moments for reflection. Try journaling or meditation to strengthen these virtues. For instance, setting aside time each morning to write about what you’re grateful for can help cultivate joy and a positive outlook.

Example: Consider someone facing a stressful situation at work. By embodying patience and self-control, they can approach the challenge calmly, think clearly, and devise effective solutions rather than reacting impulsively or with frustration.

From Thought to Action: Bridging the Gap

With a strong moral core, you’ll be ready to act decisively, like a deer leaping without hesitation. Many of us get stuck in our heads, overanalyzing situations or worrying, which can lead to procrastination. The space between thought and action—the liminal space—should not be a place of doubt. A solid moral compass requires no overthinking.

Practical Application: Set clear goals and work on accomplishing them. Start small and build confidence through repeated actions.

Example: Picture someone debating whether to pursue a new job opportunity. By building confidence through small, repeated steps—like updating their resume or networking—they reduce overwhelm and gain the courage to make a decisive move.

Spiritual Alignment: Following Your Guiding Light

For those guided by faith, remember that the Holy Spirit is your guiding light. Let this divine presence empower you to do what’s right without wavering. Take that leap of faith—a quantum leap, if you will. What’s crucial is the unwavering commitment to moral action, bridging the gap between spirituality and behavioral change.

Practical Application: Infuse your daily life with moments of spiritual connection. Turn your workouts into a space filled with God’s presence. Feel the divine breath within you as you breathe. Take brief pauses throughout your day to acknowledge this presence. A review of 22 studies published within the last 30 years found that taking breaks of ten minutes or less from a task can reduce fatigue and increase vitality (Weir, 2022).

Navigating Life’s Spaces

We often hear the advice to “use your time wisely,” but it’s equally essential to use our spaces in life wisely, especially liminal spaces—the in-betweens. Some of these spaces are beyond our control, while others we can intentionally create to promote our health and wellbeing.

Examples of Liminal Spaces:

1. Empty nest phase: Transitioning from active parenting to a life with more independence and self-focus.

2. Company mergers: Navigating the uncertainty between your established role in the old organization and your evolving identity in the newly merged company.

Whatever space we find ourselves in, filling them with meaningful time and purpose is important.

Practical Application: If you’re an empty nester, create a new routine, including joining a book club or cooking class. Fill your newfound free time with enriching activities that promote personal growth and well-being.

Conclusion

Applying these virtues and habits in practical, tangible ways allows you to navigate life’s liminal spaces with grace and purpose. Remember, developing a strong moral core is not an overnight achievement; it’s an evolving way of life. Embrace the journey and let your strong moral compass guide you through life’s various spaces and transitions.
